Meeet Dr Karlen

Kris Martin Karlen, MD

Dr Karlen is the Corneal and Refractive Surgeon, Facility Medical Director at TLC Silicon Valley and is a fully trained laser vision correction surgeon with a specialized expertise in corneal surgery. Additionally, he is a Senior Ophthalmology Physician at Kaiser Permanente in Milpitas.

Dr. Karlen donates his expertise several weeks every year to under-served cataract and glaucoma patients in Ghana, West Africa. (See the photos below) He has ten years of general ophthalmology experience and has received extensive training in laser vision correction from TLC Laser Eye Centers.

Dr. Karlen is one of the few surgeons who has been performing specialized procedures in clear corneal cataract surgery and surgery of the anterior segment. He also holds the distinction of serving as the past President of the Kaiser Permanente Ophthalmology Society. Dr. Karlen is board-certified by the National Association of Medical Examiners and by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency in Ophthalmology from Boston University Hospital.

Once a year, Dr Karlen works in the clinics in Ghana, West Africa. There is only one Ophthalmologist for every 500,000 people in Ghana.

 

While seeing patients in the clinics, Dr Karlen tries to spend as much time possible teaching local ophthalmologists.

The general guidelines for qualified candidates are the following:

  • Farsighted (hyperopia) individuals

  • Person is at least 18 years of age
  • Healthy eyes-no cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachments, bleeding disorders, etc.
